The composition is very good and the tonality overall is fine as well. But maybe, just maybe, the shadow-style does not work too well here. Because: The eye of the viewer is lead to the right by the large amount of negative space on the left. Which is good. But the expectation is not satisfied IMHO. A boy and a dog, yes, but as they are standing so close, almost in portrait distance, one would most likely want to see a bit more than a black silhouette. This even more so, as other parts of the photo don't disappear in the dark. It is not a complete silhouette. Thus it remains somewhat undecided in its creation.
The Artist thought this was FAIR

i like how the boy is leaning in and the dog is clearly intent on you with alert ears and rigid posture.. its as though these two just discovered you, laying there in the desert just before dusk.
